Another Ice Storm

Headlight through an ice covered pine.
...And we hope it's the lat one this winter!

We've had no power for the last two days due to a winter ice storm that turned vicious. On our street alone we lost at least 10 trees. The guys had to get out chainsaw just so we could make it off the mountain.

We got many offers to go stay with friends while we had no power, but there was no way I could leave my critters here without a caretaker.  I guess that's the crazy goat lady in me!  We've been heating water on our grill for the goats every 4-5 hours as we get through this ice storm and a friend let us drive out and use her microwave for the goatlings' heating pads.

Nearing the and of the Polar Vortex

Hourly trips with hot water and checking on hay... They are staying in their shed today and the feathered fowl are staying in their coop again... all 4 together without any fighting. They must be cold! So happy they are snuggling each other peacefully though!

Tomorrow is supposed to be our day of rest but with these low temps and the stress from that I am going to give them their kelp, Vitalerbs & Redmond Salts today and again tomorrow. They can rest the next day.

Cant believe it's going to be 60 again come Saturday. Crazy weather!!! Going to have to watch out for signs and symptoms of pneumonia with the rapid warm up!

Continuation of the Polar Vortex: Day Two

Our heater turned itself on to 'emergency' heat sometime last night.... Brrrrrrrr it's cold this morning!

I really wish I could have sneaked outside last night to check on the goats without them all waking up and coming out of their hopefully cozy warm straw beds. I really need some Ninja Skillz!
The water was frozen solid this morning, but all the goats came out of the goat shed VERY slowly to great me.  It's so relieving to find goats are all up and alert even though we did have some shivering going on. They ate their rations, tops dressings, drunk their special tea, and is now eating hay. And must not forget our feathered fowl, they were all doing well this morning even though they refused to come out of their upper roosting coop.

I know there have been a lot of critters lost to this storm.... Breaks my heart. I am so very thankful that all ours have survived it and from here on out, it's going to be warming up.
Going to be a long day. I cannot believe it's only 2 degrees here and the wind is picking up. Going to take out how ACV water every hour on the hour and continue with the special tea every 4 hours.  Going to keep a close eye on all living things today to be sure.

Polar Vortex.... wth??

Just as temperatures are beginning to warm  around here, another arctic blast that they are calling a polar vortex appears to be on the horizon.

Prepping as much as we can and we're only supposed to get down to -3 at the lowest tomorrow... But it's dropping from 54 currently to 6 degrees in just a matter of hours this evening . Which is really what is worrisome me... the sudden hard and fast drop in temps.

For the goats,  we took all the hay out of the Sleepy Goat Inn and put in layers upon layers of straw. Drove out to a friend's homestead and she let us borrow some of her pet heaters which are  microwavable. Certainly plan on using those tonight.
T
urned the inn around and blocked more wind flow with a couple of tarps, giving them a cozy corner to get into when they are not secluding themselves in the shed. Got an extra bucket so we can rotate hot water for them to drink every night.

For the chickens, they got fresh straw and their feeder & watering can was moved up into the roosting area of their coop.

The dogs are easy peasy, they get the luxury of staying in the house.

Now just going to say a lot of prayers, like some candles of concern and toss and turn all night with worry!
Everyone be safe for the next few days and have a back up plan for if you lose power.
